08/28/2010 - Chicago, IL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Rookie Eduardo Nunez hit his first career home run and drove in a total of four runs, as the New York Yankees outlasted the Chicago White Sox, 12-9, in the second test of a three-game set from U.S. Cellular Field.
Marcus Thames homered twice for the Yankees, who remained tied atop the American League East standings with the Rays, who defeated the Red Sox on Saturday. Nick Swisher hit a two-run homer and knocked in a total of three runs.
CC Sabathia (18-5) went seven innings in the start, allowing five runs on nine hits to pick up his fifth straight win and MLB-best 18th victory. The left- hander also struck out nine and walked one.
Paul Konerko, Alexei Ramirez, and Andruw Jones each homered for the White Sox, who now sit 4 1/2 games behind Minnesota in the AL Central standings after the Twins beat the Mariners on Saturday.
John Danks (12-9) lasted just 4 1/3 frames, giving up eight runs on six hits to suffer the loss. He also fanned five batters and walked four.
The Yankees got the home run parade started in the top of the first inning. Derek Jeter led off with a walk and crossed the plate on Swisher's blast to left-center field.
Chicago got a run back in the home first via Konerko's RBI single.
New York got two-run homers from Nunez and Thames in the second and third frames, respectively, to build a 6-1 margin.
Konerko hit a two-run homer to left in the bottom of the third to make it a 6-3 game. Jones belted a two-run home run during Chicago's next at-bat to cut the gap to 6-5.
The Yankees, though, plated four runs in the fifth to make it 10-5. Swisher walked and Robinson Cano singled to put men on first and second with one out. Tony Pena relieved Danks and struck out Thames swinging. Jorge Posada followed with a two-run double to right. Pena then walked the next two batters to load the bases. Nunez stepped to the plate and drove in a pair of runs with a base hit.
Swisher's RBI single in the eighth extended New York's lead to 11-5.
The White Sox plated a pair of runs in the home eighth. Joba Chamberlain started the frame on the mound and put runners on second and third with one out. Boone Logan came in from the bullpen and got pinch-hitter Mark Teahen to ground out, but a run scored on the play. Gordon Beckham followed with an RBI double to cut the deficit to 11-7.
Thames homered in the top of the ninth to make it a 12-7 contest.
Chicago, though, made things interesting in the home ninth. Ramirez led off the frame with a homer off David Robertson. Alex Rios followed with a liner to right field. Austin Kearns was blinded by the lights and the ball rolled to the wall. Rios went to third on the play and crossed the plate on Konerko's base hit to make it 12-9.
That forced the Yankees to bring closer Mariano Rivera into the game. He got Carlos Quentin to ground into a double play. Ramon Castro singled and Jones walked to bring the tying run to the plate. Teahen, though, lined out to give Rivera his 26th save of the year.
